Florida’s 2025 Hometown Heroes Housing Program: Big Changes & Big Opportunities
If you’ve been thinking about buying your first home in Florida, the Hometown Heroes Housing Program could be the key to making it happen—especially with the latest updates for 2025.
This state program is designed to make homeownership more affordable for the people who serve and strengthen our communities every day. And this year, there’s even more funding available—plus a refined list of who qualifies.
What the Program Offers
Qualified first-time homebuyers may receive:
Up to 5% of the total loan amount in assistance (capped at $35,000).
Assistance comes as a 0% interest, non-amortizing, 30-year deferred second mortgage.
Minimum assistance available: $10,000.
That means you could get significant help covering down payment and closing costs—two of the biggest hurdles for first-time buyers.
What’s New in 2025
The Florida Legislature has approved $50 million in new funding for the Hometown Heroes Loan Program in the 2025-2026 Fiscal Year budget (awaiting Governor DeSantis’ final approval).
However, the program is now limited to borrowers employed full-time (35+ hours/week) by a Florida-based employer in one of these eligible roles:
Healthcare worker
School staff member
First responder
Public safety employee
Court employee
Childcare worker
Active-duty servicemember (U.S. military, military reserves, Coast Guard, or Florida National Guard)
Veteran employed full-time by a Florida-based employer
Eligibility Basics
To qualify, buyers must:
Be employed full-time (as defined by your employer) by a Florida-based employer with a physical location in Florida.
Report to or work from that Florida location—even if you work remotely part of the time.
Be a first-time homebuyer purchasing your primary residence.
Why This Matters Now
With home prices and interest rates still a challenge for many, this program can make the difference between “someday” and “now” when it comes to buying a home.
And with $50 million in fresh funding, more of our hometown heroes will have a chance to get into a home they love without draining their savings.
